Dressing the Perfect Pear

Dress shopping with my niece this weekend was a great lesson in dressing a perfect pear-shaped figure. Sure I’m biased but still it’s fair to say Lira is a knockout 22-year-old fashion plate living in New York City. She’s also a perfect pear.  Next time I’ll snap a picture for you but for now think JLo as she’s in firm possession of the family bootie.

As we waded through racks, she confessed her current obsession with purple, a great alternative to black this holiday season. If you’re actually defying the odds and shopping this season you may want to add your favorite shade of purple to that holiday shopping list. From lavender to royal, there’s a shade that will work on most everyone.

We found no shortage of New Years Eve frocks to choose from but without fail it was the A-line babydolls that most flattered her youthful pear shape.

If you consider yourself a pear but don’t have Lira’s legs, go longer. I find that a mid-calf (or even longer) A-line cut with either an empire or an inset waist is best for my curves too.

We settled on an A-line babydoll from her favorite local boutique with layers of sparkling purple chiffon. Gorgeous girl. Gorgeous dress. $44. I found a similar look at Norstrom for you (shown). For their smaller sizes (up to 16), Nordstrom has shop by body type and shop by silhouette functions. So handy. Anyway, back to the dressing room...

Lira twirled and worried about wearing something a few inches above the knee in front of her parents, I smiled. I won’t be there to watch her dance in the New Year, but I know she’s going to look great and feel great in her little purple dress.

What are you wearing for New Year’s Eve?
