It probably wasn't until at least five minutes after I said "I do" that the curious questions began raining down on my newlywed head. "You guys going to start a family?" "So, you thinking about babies yet?" "Is that holiday bloat or do you have some exciting news to share?"
Once I had left my glass of wine somewhere at a party. I wasn't forsaking it or abstaining altogether; I'd merely misplaced my glass. "You are pregnant!" a pal shrieked when she saw my empty hand. I pictured friends and family picturing me...trying...and felt the need to squeeze into my skinniest jeans and hold tight to a cocktail every time I went out in public, lest someone start planning the world's worst surprise baby shower in my honor.
I never thought I'd say this, ever, but thank God I'm not a Duchess.
Poor Catherine of Cambridge. With her first wedding anniversary approaching, she has to face the fact that both Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth had a royal bun in the oven before a year of marriage -- and, although People says that the couple has "babies on the brain," there's been no news yet.
It's gotta be hard being a princess who is trying to conceive. The woman can't have an awkward handbag-holding moment without making royal-baby headlines. (Google the words "Kate Middleton pregnant" and you get more than 8 million hits. Which is slightly absurd since the Duchess is not, in fact, currently knocked up.) And surely at 85, Her Magesty the Queen must be a little anxious to hear this delightful news. Can you imagine the dinner table chats at Kensington Palace? "So Grandmum was wondering when you might produce an heir to the throne. No pressure or anything..."
I say let them be! Pressure and stress are not conducive to baby-making. Plus, Kate and William are very busy traveling the world, posing for photos and practicing being parents on their new royal pooch. Babies can wait. (But not too long, please.)
