After the most competitive season of Dancing with the Stars, it all came down to former season 8 rivals Melissa Rycroft and Shawn Johnson, so Rycroft naturally expected the former champion to emerge victorious again.
Rycroft, who had come in third place the season the Olympic gymnast took first place, assumed she was going to lose to Johnson again after Kelly Monaco was eliminated as the second runner-up. She even had to remind herself not to look upset.
"To be honest, when it was the two of us there I assumed [Shawn] won. I thought, 'Keep your smile on,'" Melissa revealed about standing next to Johnson and Derek Hough.
But this time it was Rycroft (and partner Tony Dovolani) -- the only of the three finalists not to have previously won -- whose name was called as the winner. She explained that she and Dovolani went into shock when their name was called.
"It's official and it's unbelievable. My reaction said it all," Tony, enjoying his very first mirror ball in 14 seasons, told E! News. "I lost my marbles."
As for Rycroft's reaction to earning the much-coveted trophy, she said: "This is heavy!"
The former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and Bachelor alum overcame a serious neck injury that landed her in the hospital to become one of the season's most consistent and perfect-scoring contestants.
And it looked like everyone was just as happy for Rycroft and Dovolani's first win as they were.
