Before you had a baby, you probably never thought you’d be dying to know when your child would be ready to ride in a grocery cart seat or go in a swimming pool. But these baby tricks and triumphs aren’t just exciting for you as a parent -- they can make your life easier a whole lot, too. (Sleep training anyone?) To find out if it’s the right time for your tot to try something new, read on for our complete guide to milestones big and small.
Roll Over?
Ready between: 2 and 5 months
During tummy time, you may notice your baby lift herself up on her hands like she’s about to do a push-up and then rock back and forth. Get ready, because her first rollover is coming soon. Once she gets stronger, that rocking motion will send her over onto her back. Getting back onto her tummy, though, will prove harder; she likely won’t master that trick until later when she’s between 4 and 5 months. If your baby never rolls over, however, don’t fret: “many babies now bypass rolling and go straight to sitting since they spend an awful lot of time on their backs,” says pediatrician Ari Brown, M.D., author of Baby 411 and Toddler 411. “We encourage more tummy time so your baby can work on those muscles. But, if your baby bypasses rolling over, it is okay.”
