Green Screen! 10 Great Earth Day Films for Kids

April 22 is Earth Day, and no doubt many kids will celebrate by staying indoors and watching television. But that doesn't mean they still can't show some reverence for the environment. Below are ten great family-friendly Earth-themed films presently available on DVD. Just turn off excess lights, load your dishwasher fully and open a window to really get into the mood first. (And don't ask Earth how old she is either -- it's a contentious subject, and rude to boot!)

HOOT (2006)
Green Theme: Rescuing endangered owls from politicians intent on developing their natural habitat. Owls haven't been this popular since one counted Tootsie Pop licks.

WALL-E (2008)
Green Theme: Saving the planet through organic renewal. Also, rejecting sedentary behavior, soda, and comfy armchairs.

MARCH OF THE PENGUINS (2005)
Green Theme: How the environment impacts penguins' food-finding rituals. You won't find any dancing or secret agent penguins in this documentary, nor is there always a happy ending.

HAPPY FEET (2006)
Green Theme: How humans messing with the food chain are putting penguins and other animals in peril. (Even worse, humans are making pointlessly patronizing animated films like this one, but who am I to argue with the Academy?)

THE LION KING (1994)
Green Theme: Circle of life…lions... yadda yadda…

FERNGULLY (1992)
Green Theme: Protecting the natural environment is of utmost importance. Getting mad when the most successful movie of all time borrows your plotline, not so much.

ARCTIC TALE (2007)
Green Theme: A walrus and polar bear grow up together in their natural environment... which is not, by the way, the zoo.

OVER THE HEDGE (2006)
Green Theme: Woodland animals threatened by urban sprawl. Not nearly as threatening: the acting debut of Avril Lavigne.

THE LORAX (1972)
Green Theme: Saving forests and trees from corporate development. Green update: The Lorax is being recycled as a 3D release in 2012. (Between you and me, I hear the book is just as good).

EARTH (2009)
Green Theme: More real animals doing real things in their real homes. Maybe this environmental sub-genre needs its own "Habitat Day"?
