Easter crafts: Scherenschnitte mirror decoration

Scherenschnitte is the German folk art craft of cutting silhouettes out of paper. Paper cutting traditions came over to this country from Germany and Switzerland in the 1700s. You and your children can make wonderful mirror decorations using this method. The silver of the mirror gives a new dimension to this craft.

What You'll Need:

  • Black or pastel colored construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Mirror

Instructions:

  1. Cut egg shape out of construction paper.
  2. Fold paper in half lengthwise and then again in half widthwise. Fold paper again as many times, and in as many ways as you want, depending on the size of your egg shape.
  3. Snip off corners and cut geometrical designs in the same fashion as you would to make a snowflake.
  4. Unfold.
  5. Tape to your mirror.
