Family Time Calendar: Eat Strawberries for America

Fruit and chocolate and sprinkles? Why, eating these strawberries is practically patriotic.

What you'll need:

  • 8 ounces white chocolate, broken into pieces
  • 1 tablespoon shortening, such as Crisco (you can substitute a tablespoon of flavorless cooking oil)
  • Blue sprinkles
  • 1 pound strawberries
  • Chopsticks or forks
  • Wax paper
  • Baking sheet

 

What you'll do:

Carefully wash and dry the strawberries. Put the white chocolate and the shortening into a pot over a double boiler. Slowly melt the chocolate. When the chocolate has melted, let it cool slightly and decant it from the hot pot into a more child-friendly bowl. Spear a strawberry through the stem with a chopstick or fork. This will help kids dip the strawberries without dipping their fingers into the warm chocolate. Plop the newly dipped strawberries into a bowl of blue sprinkles to coat them. Then let them set on the wax-paper-covered baking sheet. Chill until ready to eat. These should be eaten the same day they're made. We don't think you'll have a problem with that.
