In retaliation for Edward killing James (in Twilight), Victoria assembles an army of newborn vampires (humans newly turned into vampires), with Bella as their target. Aware of an imminent war, Bella retreats to the La Push reservation and gathers with its inhabitants around a bonfire to hear ancient tales, including the story of The Third Wife, about a woman who sacrifices herself to protect the people she loves.
