Stefanie Iris Weis, author of Eco-Sex: Go Green Between the Sheets and Make Your Love Life Sustainable, has got news for you: Being environmentally responsible can be much more personal than recycling newspapers and toting canvas grocery bags to the store. Take your undies, for example. The major environmental problem with producing any kind of apparel is that many fabrics are made from oil-based products and shipped around the world using -- you guessed it -- oil. To clean up your panty drawer, Weiss says organic cotton is one of your best bets (the eco-downside to conventional cotton is all the water and pesticides used during production). “Vintage is also all sorts of eco-friendly,” says Weiss. But don’t worry: Vintage in this case doesn’t mean your skivvies have been used, just that they’re made from recycled materials or discarded cloth.
