Edema at Four Months: Isn't It Early in My Pregnancy For This?

I'm 31-years-old and in my fourth month of pregnancy. My feet are very badly swollen. My mom says it's too early to develop edema. I'm not under a midwife's care yet, but a regular checkup two weeks ago indicated that everything was okay. I would also like to know how to find a midwife in my area?

I have to agree that it is a bit early to experience severe edema. I highly recommend that you select a regular prenatal care provider and schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Your blood pressure and urine need to be checked on a regular basis. You may need a kidney evaluation as it is possible for pre-eclampsia (toxemia or pregnancy-induced hypertension) to start this early.

Elevate your legs as much as possible and rest on your left side a few hours at mid-day or when you come home. Increase your fluids, protein and calcium.

To find a midwife in your area call 1-888-MIDWIFE and they will provide you with some names. Good luck with this pregnancy.
