When it comes to career, family and the game of life in general, Elisabeth Hasselbeck isn’t afraid to go long. She broke the ice at the recent Belly Bowl event at NYC's Destination Maternity -- which celebrated the launch of Reebok NFL maternity wear -- by assuring reporters that no, she wasn’t pregnant again. (The 33-year old co-host of The View has three kids under the age of 5 with hubby of eight years, former professional football player Tim).
Dressed in a be-dazzled version of her husband’s actual Giants jersey, complete with skinny jeans, a ponytail and bright red 4” platform heels, the petite reality-star-turned-TV-host played the part of football wife, teaching the crowd of mostly expecting women the basics of the game, like how to “hike” the ball and make a pass (the demonstration, using pregnant audience members as “teammates,” was both hysterical and adorable).
While she wanted to teach other women a few tricks of the trade, she was primarily there to promote the new line, which includes tees from all 32 NFL teams with kitschy sayings like “Little Giants Kicker” and “Jets Fan on Board.” She conducted a little game of football trivia, to which I actually responded to two questions correctly, winning one of the tee shirts. (See, honey? I really do listen to you!)
After the demonstration, Hasselbeck, no stranger to maternity garb (her youngest is just 13 months old), sat down with me, mom to mom, where I got in on some of her top tips for looking and feeling great throughout pregnancy and beyond. (I say “beyond” because, for me, the hardest part of having my first child last September, was the time right after pregnancy.) Here’s what she had to say:
-- It’s sexy to be pregnant, promises Hasselbeck even though we don’t always feel that way. Break out of a rut by trying something new. "When I was pregnant; I wore blue eyeliner even though I have brown eyes," she says. Don't be afraid to have fun -- it will make you feel good!
-- "Embrace your new curves!" she advises. "A woman who's pregnant is probably the sexiest she'll ever be to the man in her life, so she should work it!" To her, the perfect pregnancy look is a cute long tee (she wore her husband's) with a cardigan and leggings. Comfortable and forgiving!
-- "Weigh the changes your body is going through -- it’s almost like going through puberty again!" she says. Take skincare for example. You have to adjust your routine and try new products to find what will work for you while you're going through this new phase.
-- Learn to accept help when it’s offered. "That is the best way to feel great while pregnant," says Hasselbeck. "Don't overextend yourself."
