While George Clooney didn’t nab a Golden Globe on Sunday – best actor honors went to Jeff Bridges instead -- it was clear that the actor and activist was smiling about someone special: Elisabetta Canalis, his girlfriend of six months.
On the Golden Globes red carpet, Clooney and Canalis, 31 -- a model, actress and television presenter in her native Italy -- looked every bit the glamorous couple. Canalis, or “Eli,” as she’s known in Europe, wore a shimmering Roberto Cavalli gown (she has also modeled his lingerie) and somehow managed to stand out amid the parade of stunning A-list actresses. As Clooney tightly clutched her hand, tongues were wagging: Could Canalis finally be the one to snag a marriage proposal from the longtime bachelor?
Of course, toting paramours down the red carpet is nothing new for Clooney (he took then-girlfriend Sarah Larson to the Oscars in 2009; the couple split a few months later). But Canalis’ red carpet stroll at this year's Globes wasn't her first with the 48-year-old superstar. She's walked past cameras with Clooney at several glitzy events, including this month’s New York Film Critic’s Circle Awards and the Venice Film Festival in September. What’s more, Clooney took both Canalis and his mother, Nina, to November's Los Angeles premiere of Up in the Air.
According to People.com, the actor’s friends believe that Canalis, with her high-profile career, sophisticated élan and alluring accent, could prove to be more significant than just another Girl of the Year. "She's stunning," Vera Farmiga, Clooney's love interest in Up in the Air, told People about Canalis. "She's a real gentlewoman. I dug her."
Up in the Air producer Ivan Reitman also gushed that Canalis is “gorgeous" and that Clooney "seems to really dig her."
Clooney, who was married once for three years to actress Talia Balsam, has publicly sworn off legally recognized unions. (In 2002, he famously told The New York Times, “Look, I'm a romantic. I like marriage," he said -- adding, after a beat, "In the movies.") But while spectators wait to see if romance will blossom into commitment, Clooney seems happy to pass the days with his bella donna at his villa on Italy's Lake Como. We can just picture the roguish grin as he winks at local gossip hounds as if to ask, "What's the rush?"
