Actress Elizabeth Banks may have already been a parent to her little boy Felix, but once baby Magnus joined her family a few months ago, she says she really became a mom.
"Two is very different from one," the Hunger Games star told People at a recent event. "When you have one kid, you feel like you can jet set around and you can throw him on the hip and you get your life done. You don't realize how easy one is until you have two. Now I'm really a mom. Oh, I am a mom now! This is for serious -- I am responsible for two people now."
Not surprisingly, Banks' comments have caused a bit of an uproar. "Why do moms feel the need to one up each other? It doesn't matter how many children you have, you are still a mom," one People commenter wrote. "What an ignorant comment." Added another: "To make it seem like parents of only children aren't 'real' moms is crazy. I'm an only child, and my mother was a REAL MOM 100% of the time."
We're pretty sure Banks' didn't mean to insult anyone as she spoke with the reporter off the cuff while attending a Peter Rabbit party at a babyGap store. And what she's saying makes sense: I had no idea what I was doing half the time when I had one child. Each night I'd say a little prayer of thanks for not ruining my baby. But, eventually, I started to figure things out. And then, 25 months later, just when I thought I was getting the hang of this motherhood thing, baby number two arrived. I think there are plenty of moms out there who would agree with me that having an almost-2-year-old and an infant, as Banks does, will rock any parent's world.
What Banks probably meant to say is that, as a mom of one baby, you get a rhythm going and a routine down and then it's an even playing field. Add another child to the mix and suddenly you're outnumbered. Of course, she was a "real" mom when she had only one child. But I kinda have to agree with another commenter who wrote, "One is one and two are ten!" (And to moms of more than two -- we watch and learn.)
