Right from the start, Elizabeth Taylor was unusual. Born in a London hospital in 1932, the doctors gave her parents news that their baby had a rare mutation. Her actress mother was relieved when the doctors explained that Elizabeth had simply been born with double rows of eyelashes. Those stunning eyelashes, and the unusual violet-blue eyes they framed, would one day seal Elizabeth’s reputation as the most beautiful woman in the world. As a child, Elizabeth (pictured at age 7) lived in luxury in England. When anticipation of World War II caused her family to flee to America, they settled in Southern California -- with the hope that Hollywood would fall in love with eight-year-old Elizabeth. They didn’t have to wait for long.
