Elmo Launches Video, Facebook Page in Olympic Torchbearer Bid

The Sesame Street star is determined to carry the Olympic torch this summer

It's official: Elmo has Olympic fever, too. The three-and-a-half-year old Muppet and Sesame Street star has launched a video and Facebook campaign in a quest to be the first monster to ever carry the Olympic torch.

In the video, dubbed "ElmOlympian," we find the little red Muppet in London dishing that "Elmo thinks if he trains for all the Olympic events, Elmo will have this torchbearer thing locked up. Yeah baby!"

Sesame executive producer Carol-Lynn Parente told Today.com that Elmo would be an ideal torchbearer because he's both exuberent and enjoys sports. "He loves the fun of being an athlete," she said. "He's learned a lot of things on Sesame Street about exercise being good for you."

The torch relay, which kicked off on on May 19, runs for 70 days, through 1,000 towns in the United Kingdom and will comprise some 8,000 torchbearers. While roughly 7,300 of those bearer names were announced back in March, an additional 700 or so celebrities and notables are still yet to be named.

Whether Elmo, who is, after all, a puppet, will be considered eligible to carry the torch remains to be seen.
