Emmy producers may be regretting their decision to hire Jimmy Kimmel to host this year's awards ceremony (airing on ABC this Sunday at 8 p.m. ET). The host of Jimmy Kimmel Live says he's got something up his sleeve.
"I am gonna do something very weird during the show," he tells Entertainment Weekly. "I think it could possibly be the biggest prank ever pulled, as far as number of people involved. Possibly. I haven’t researched it, but it’ll definitely be right up there. The audience will be a participant in this. So it’s important that you watch because you’re either going to be in on it or not."
Pranks are, well, kind of Kimmel's thing. On his show recently, he sent a crewmember out on the sidewalk to ask pedestrians what they thought of the iPhone 5. Then they were handed the iPhone 4, and cameras rolled while they praised it for being faster, or thinner, or heavier than its predecessor.
A few years back, he suggested that his viewers douse sleeping loved ones with cold water and film their reactions. He's also tricked innocent kids into thinking they were taking a lie detector test. (This last one was actually really funny, because the kid clearly figured Kimmel out, but played along to humor him.)
As for the details of his Emmy prank, Kimmel is keeping quiet. "I will say nothing." He has divulged that he plans to embarrass his parents, who will be in the audience. "I hope they don’t know about it," he says. "I told a local guy, [KABC's] George Pennacchio, yesterday, forgetting that there’s an Internet. Hopefully that hasn’t been ruined. Luckily my parents can’t read, so it’ll be okay."
It couldn't have been easy raising Kimmel, and this is the thanks his parents get? Let's hope, at least, that he's putting them up in the Beverly Wilshire. And buying them a fancy dinner.
What do you think Kimmel will do to carry off a prank at the Emmy Awards?
