Did you see What Not to Wear this past Friday night? It featured Teresa a cello player from the Bronx and part of it was filmed at Lee Lee’s Valise. Stacy and Clinton picked out several great pieces but they really loved the two-tone green leaf Milly dress by Olivia Harper. ~My Pick of the Week!
“Teresa, a 47-year-old cellist living in New York City, hits all the wrong notes with her wardrobe. Having never felt beautiful, she’s chosen comfort over style with sack dresses, over-sized tops and even hiding her lack of a bra under tacky scarves. Can Stacy and Clinton help her change her tune and boost her self-esteem so she can emerge as a fashion maestro?”
The Milly dress was a perfect fit for Teresa . Designed for an apple shape…it fit Teresa perfectly. Most plus designers concentrate on hour-glass or pear shape figures. The apple shape is often neglected. Unlike the hour-glass and pear bodies the apple has less of a waist….but still has a shape. The problem is the apple often carries more in the belly area. We have to create a waist for an apple. The empire waist works to define a waist at the smallest part of the rib cage.
When you look at an apple shape…she has shape…but if put in a dress that pulls in at the waist…all you see is tummy. So that’s where the empire waist is key!
Stacy praised the bold print. Many women shy away from prints and stick to solids…like basic black (because it is a safe choice.) I think they all hear their mothers whispering in their ears when shopping. A bold print keeps the eye moving and doesn’t focus on problem areas.
Colors also brighten up your face! During the show Teresa said she didn’t like the print that it was a leopard print disguised in green and that she appeared older looking. Stacy and Clinton completely disagreed. Changing up your accessories can update your look and make it more contemporary looking.
What is crazy is that they always pick a dress that we sell out of by the time the show airs. The Milly is a staple in the shop….but the fabrics do come and go. Currently, we have the Circles Milly, Missoni-like Milly and the basic Black Milly with more prints to come! They all have the great same fit that is perfect for the apple…but will look great on the hour-glass, pear and every fruit in-between!
