The Plot: A pair of South Central L.A. cops (Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña are singled-out by a drug cartel after confiscating their money and guns. The Buzz: Writer-director David Ayer (Training Day, Street Kings) has carved out a smart niche for himself as a storyteller of gritty LAPD stories. (Just check out the movie’s red-band trailer, which doesn’t mince words.) To do justice to the material, Gyllenhaal trained aggressively. "Five months, for a 22-day shoot," he told Details. "Three nights a week in ride-alongs with cops. Fight training every morning...then the shooting range, shooting past each other’s heads, with live ammo." This movie’s not for the faint of heart.
