How 'E.T.' Connects Me To My Kids
Jan 01 17 hours ago
When I excitedly played E.T. -- arguably one of the best family films of all time -- for my kids a few weeks ago, they watched, but unenthusiastically. I could instantly see why. Compared with films of today, movies I enjoyed as a kid look like the "before" clothes in a laundry detergent commercial -- the special effects are cheap and fleeting, and the animation flat. The time period itself is an issue: the culture of the 1980's is as alien to my children as the blue-skinned Na'vi of Avatar's Pandora

Ten TV Shows I Couldn't Wait For My Kids to Leave Behind
Dec 31 1 day ago
To their parents' eyes, kids seem to stay at one age forever. Like a clock's minute hand, they advance too slowly for anyone paying attention to really notice. The same feels true about preschool TV shows they watch religiously. Parents find themselves asking, "Will they ever grow out of Sesame Street and Dragon Tales?"

Is 'Avatar' Appropriate for Kids?
Dec 31 1 day ago
A PG-13-rated roller-coaster ride of visual stimulation, Avatar is appropriate for some kids, but certainly not all. Yet it's being marketed with an age-blind blitz of ads, TV specials, fast food tie-ins, and very cool "augmented reality" products from Mattel. DVR Domination: Are Kids Missing Out on Missing Out?
Dec 30 2 days ago
Once when I was seven, my family spent a little too much time at the mall, and returned home already 20 minutes for a highly-anticipated episode of The Six Million Dollar Man (something about Bigfoot) . I was bereft. Sure, it would return as a rerun someday, but I'd have to scour the TV Guide each week looking for it, then be in just the right place at just the right time.

Trailer Trouble: Can Violent Movie Previews Spoil a Child's Innocence?
Dec 30 2 days ago
If I choose to keep my kids away from films with loads of violence or overt sexuality, there are enough safeguards out there to help me do so. If there’s a movie I feel is inappropriate for my children, I can pretty much just make sure they don’t see it. When it comes to trailers, though… well, that’s a completely different story. They’re everywhere.
