Bring Back Cocktail Hour
The most important '60s accessory isn't a tie or an engagement ring, but a good strong cocktail.
Tom Collins (courtesy of the Millenium Hilton)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 1 1/2 teaspoons superfine sugar
- 1 1/2 ounces (1 jigger) gin club soda or seltzer water
- 1 lemon slice for garnish
In a tall glass, stir together the lemon juice and the sugar until the sugar is dissolved, add the gin and enough ice cubes to fill the glass, and stir the drink well. Top off the drink with the club soda or the seltzer water, stir it well, and garnish it with the lemon slice.
Old Fashioned Cocktail (courtesy of Canadian Club)
In a short wide-mouthed tumbler, place a lump of sugar and add as much Angostura Bitters as the lump will absorb. Then dissolve the lump of sugar in a little water. Nearly fill the tumbler with small ice cubes and add a wine glass full of Canadian Club 12-year reserve whisky. Add a twisted lemon peel.
Or drink the whisky like Don Draper, neat (meaning without a mixer or ice). Cheers!
