Into the '90s
A new decade meant a new record deal for Jackson, who signed a then-record setting $65 million renewal deal with Sony (parent company of Epic). His first new effort of the decade: The album Dangerous, which was less well-received by critics and fans than 1987's Bad, but went on to outsell Bad, with 30 million copies purchased worldwide. The album's biggest singles were "Remember the Time" and "Black or White," which also spawned the memorable video that included Macaulay Culkin and Tyra Banks, and was largely responsible for introducing the idea of video morphing. Though the album's sales were more than respectable, by the '90s Jackson's personal quirks and tabloid presence had begun to outshine his musical accomplishments, and many remember the album as being inferior to Bad.
