Leaving the U.S.
After the Santa Monica trial, Jackson, amidst growing rumors that he was in deep debt, moved to Bahrain with his three children. He also had to close down the main house at Neverland to save money, and lost a portion of his share of the Northern Songs catalog to cover a multi-million debt. Jackson was also infrequently seen in public after leaving the U.S. in 2005, popping up most notably in London in November 2006 to accept awards for being included in the Guiness Book of World Records. He returned to America at the end of 2006 to attend a funeral for James Brown, and also agreed during this time to share custody of his first two children with ex-wife Debbie Rowe.
