Stepping Out

MJ's collaboration with The Wiz musical supervisor, and famed producer, Quincy Jones led to his breakout solo album, 1979's Off the Wall. The platinum album sealed the deal on Michael's music cred within the industry, spawned four number one hits—including "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You"—and earned Grammy, American Music Award and Billboard Music Award honors for the star. Jackson, his future tabloid behaviors still several years off, was also a teen mag pin-up hunk, but the success of Off the Wall—which went on to sell 15 million copies worldwide—didn't meet the singer's own lofty expectations, and he vowed his next record would make an even bigger impact on the music industry.
