Episiotomy: Fearful of Repeating This Procedure

I had an episiotomy with my last birth, which required a perenioplasty eight months later. I want to conceive but I'm terrified of having another episiotomy. I am considering a homebirth. Will another episiotomy be necessary?

Although I have no actual statistics for you, I would say the likelihood of another episiotomy or having a laceration would be higher in your circumstance because of the scar tissue, which would not stretch as efficiently. But this does not mean that you would experience the same thing again. In fact, I doubt that you would have a similar experience.

If you have a patient, experienced care provider to help you at the time of birth, you may not need an episiotomy at all. A small laceration can be sutured and healed with ease, so I would not be worried about this. If you have a homebirth and do need an episiotomy, the midwife will do one.

I would recommend that you sit down and discuss your concerns with a caring provider. My best to you.
