That's right -- Michael J. Fox, who played the iconic time-traveling teen in three Back to the Future films, was not producers' first choice for the role. Eric Stoltz was!
Stoltz shot footage for five weeks on the Back to the Future set before the film's writers and directors decided they had miscast the role. In this video, they explain that the actor's comic sensibilities weren't what they envisioned for the character:
It may have been a "heartbreaking" decision, but it was definitely the right one!
