For her new music video, Erykah Badu decided to single handedly re-create the Kennedy assassination... naked. If you suspect shock value is her motive, you're not alone: Badu, 39, caused quite a stir when she filmed her "Window Seat" video on the streets of Dallas.
The video debuted on Badu's website and follows the Queen of Neo Soul as she walks down Elm Street, past the Texas School Book Depository (and shocked passersby), shedding pieces of clothing along the way. At the end of the video, a completely nude Badu collapses on the spot where Kennedy was shot, with cartoon blood from her head spelling the word "groupthink."
City officials were not pleased with Badu's stunt, which was performed "guerilla"-style (i.e., without permits) in one take. In other words, the video could have ended with Badu and her camera crew going to jail. In an interview with Dallas News, Badu explained that confronting that fear was part of the point of the video:
"I was petrified, period. The whole thing was frightening... Not being in love with my body, not being secure about being vulnerable, the police coming to take me to jail. I’m breastfeeding right now... But those little things diminished as I thought about the big picture. And, as I started to walk, I confronted a lot of fears, and I hoped that it would encourage others to do the same thing in their own way."
On her Twitter feed, Badu said she cleared the idea with the critics who mattered most: her kids (a 12-year-old named 7, and a 5-year-old named Puma). "Asked 7 what he would do if teased," she wrote. "He said, I'll tell 'em my mom is great, she was having fun." As for Puma, "she looked at me with a blank face and replied, okay mama. Can I have another pudding?"
