Last year it was all about extravagant, hard-to-spell baby names. But this year, we’ll see tradition become the trend as parents move away from the outrageous and choose names rooted in good values, hard work and our current favorite, feel-good obsessions (Twilight! Mad Men!). Even celebrity mommies will let go of the anything-goes baby naming game and pick something a little more down to earth. Here’s a look at what’s in store for 2010.
Celestial and Deity Names
What it is: Your baby means the sun and the moon to you—and this year parents will get inspiration from both, and from other places in the sky. Case in point: Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi named her baby girl Krishna, which is also the name of a Hindu deity. Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo gave her first child the astral name Stella Luna, and singer Erykah Badu named her son after the planet and mythological Roman god, Mars.
