It is pumpkin season -- time for carrying home heavy gourds and carving out scary faces. For fun, you can also craft an everlasting pumpkin, made mostly from something you find in your hardware store that weighs hardly anything at all! It will be the pride of any decorative pumpkin patch. And we guarantee: This pumpkin won't ever rot, so the kids can enjoy it on your Thanksgiving dinner table too!
What you'll need:
- 25-inch length of 4-inch flexible plastic dryer vent
- Orange and brown acrylic paints
- Sponge brushes (one-inch wide)
- Small brown lunch bag
- Silk leaves, preferably in autumn colors and on a vine
- Hot glue gun (to be used by adults only!)
What you'll do:
Curl the dryer vent into a circle and staple it together in several places. Let the kids paint it orange. When thoroughly dry, they can dip a sponge brush into brown paint and wipe most of it off onto old newspaper. Show them how to lightly shade the pumpkin by adding brown streaks to the sides.
To make a "stem," twist the paper bag tightly, add some hot glue to one end and push it down into the center of the pumpkin. Glue some silk leaves near the stem, if desired.
