If you've ever wondered why kids always say, "Mom, mom, mom" instead of "Dad, dad, dad," you're not alone. On the ABC comedy The Middle, Patricia Heaton, 51, plays Frankie Heck, a Midwest mom who struggles to stay afloat while working, wrangling her three kids and keeping her husband happy. Sound familiar?
The Heck home isn't much of a stretch from Heaton's own, which she shares with her husband of 19 years, David Hunt, and her four sons, Samuel, 16, John, 14, Joseph, 12, and Daniel, 10. "We could shoot one or the other. It's the same thing," Heaton told iVillage in an exclusive interview. "This is exactly my life."
In one hilarious scene in The Middle, in order to take a few minutes for herself, Frankie locks herself in the bathroom at work and sits with a maxi pad covering her eyes. Of course, as soon as she leaves the bathroom, she realizes she missed 14 calls from her kids. Heaton is no stranger to these consequences of alone time. "The minute you let go, you come home and the kids haven't eaten for seven hours because your husband hasn't fed them," Heaton joked.
Watch our exclusive video to find out why the funny actress thinks men are simple creatures and how she relates so well to Frankie's oh-so-true one-liner: "We did teach them the word 'dad,' didn't we?"
