Exfoliating your skin is probably the fastest way to give yourself a fresher look. And by exfoliating you can actually improve skin tone. (When you're under thirty your skin does this every 25 days or so on it's own. After age 30 the process slows down.)
There are many techniques. For example many over-the-counter beauty products available contain glycolic acid or other AHAs. These "chemical exfoliators" work by loosening the 'glue' that holds dead skin to the surface of your skin.
Other products use a slightly abrasive texture to remove dead skin mechanically. The latest hot skin smoother in this category is Micro Pearl Abrasion, used by Madonna and other celebrities. Makeup artist JoAnna Connell, who cared for Madonna's skin during the shooting of "Swept Away" and who creates all the fake tans on "Baywatch," developed the product to help celebrity clients who were damaging their skin by getting too many aggressive anti-aging treatments.
"I discovered applying mirconized pearl mixed with other ingredients to the face is much gentler, but gave the same smooth results I wanted before I applied makeup." Soon, word spread and she decided to market the product to the world outside Hollywood. Connell claims the exfoliator works better than others because the micronized pearl pieces are round and smooth, which means when rubbed onto skin they're very gentle, but remove dead cells evenly. "They exfoliate the top layer of skin only, which improves skin's texture and helps stimulate the production of new cells and collagen."
