You take the good, you take the bad, and sometimes, you take a trip to a remote island to compete for a million dollars! Lisa Whelchel, best remembered for playing stuck-up rich girl Blair on The Facts of Life, has signed on to compete in the 25th season of Survivor.
Whelchel, 49, didn't have to be asked twice to appear on Survivor: Philippines. In fact, it was her idea. "I pushed it. I had a friend of mine make a little iPhone video and put it on my Twitter account and asked people to retweet it, and start a viral campaign to get me on this show," she told CBS in a behind-the-scenes video.
"I just had another one of my brilliant ideas!" Whelchel added with a hair flip, channeling the boarding-school student she played from 1979 to 1988. A longtime fan of Survivor, Whelchel boasts that she's watched the show from "the very first episode" in May 2000.
Naturally, she had a strategy for dealing with her '80s fame on the island. "I’m not going to volunteer it, but at the same time, even though there are a lot of young people and I’m sure they have no idea who Blair Warner is, there are some older people and even if only one knows it certainly will get around, so I won’t deny it," she told Entertainment Weekly.
And how would her prima-donna alter ego do if she had to compete on Survivor? "[Blair] would quit. She wouldn't even have a chance," joked Whelchel, who is now a Christian author and mother of three. Joining Whelchel in the Philippines will be San Francisco Giants player Jeff Kent, two former beauty queens (a Miss Utah Teen and a Miss Delaware USA), an athletic cancer survivor who has applied for the show 17 times, a sex therapist, an investment banker and a seminary student, among other intriguing characters.
The 90-minute Survivor: Phillipines premiere will take place on Wednesday, September 19 on CBS.
