This year's Academy Awards will be hosted by the guy behind a martini-swilling dog, a diabolical baby and a talking teddy bear. Seth MacFarlane, who recently brought his voice-acting talents to Saturday Night Live, has been chosen to host the 2013 Oscars.
The creator of animated comedies Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show and the feature film Ted, MacFarlane also provides the voices for some of his most popular characters, including Baby Stewie, Peter Griffin, Brian the dog, and Ted, the potty-mouthed stuffed bear who took box offices by storm this summer.
"It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars," MacFarlane, 38, said in a statement. "My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast."
Charlie Sheen roast aside, MacFarlane has plenty of credentials to host Hollywood's biggest night. A 13-time Emmy nominee (he's won two, as well as received a Grammy nomination), he has flexed his live-performance muscles in the Family Guy Live show and his own sold-out concert tour.
"Seth is unbelievably talented," Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences president Hawk Koch told the press. "We couldn't be happier with the creative team we've assembled."
He's a surprising choice, but after a lackluster hosting job by Billy Crystal last year, and a disastrous one by Anne Hathaway and James Franco the year before, the Oscars could use some fresh blood. Hopefully, MacFarlane will do what Ricky Gervais has done for the Golden Globes: add some irreverence to the proceedings, and make them a lot more fun. We just hope he avoids his gaffe from this year's Emmys and remembers which mic is turned on!
In addition to being the host, it looks like MacFarlane will have a hot date for the February ceremony. He's reportedly been dating Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke for several months. Things are definitely coming up roses for the funnyman!
Watch Seth MacFarlane break the exciting news about his Oscars gig to his dad. Eh, it could have gone better!
