This recipe for an icing-rich American flag is likely to make Labor Day the new favorite holiday in your house.

What you'll need:

  • 1 pound confectioners' sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3-4 tablespoons milk
  • 1-2 teaspoons vanilla
  • Red and blue food coloring
  • Graham crackers

What you'll do:

Combine sugar, butter, milk and vanilla in a large bowl and beat at high speed with an electric mixer. If necessary, add more milk until the mixture is the right consistency for spreading. Divide the icing into three bowls. Add red food coloring to one (quite a lot is needed to keep the flags from being pink, white and blue), blue to another, and -- you're catching on -- leave one plain white.

Using a spoon or mini offset spatulas, smear the graham crackers patriotically. Younger kids might benefit from having a picture of the flag in front of them for inspiration.
