Family Time Calendar: Get Out - iVillage

When the leaves start to change color and the weather becomes crisp, it can only mean one thing: time to go apple picking! This autumn activity can be fun for the entire family. Even the newest members of your clan will enjoy the sights and smells of the orchard. Instead of letting the kids gather apples that have already fallen (and are most likely rotting), help them pick apples right off the trees by putting them on your shoulders or lifting them up overhead. Point out the different varieties of apples that they can pick. Bring along a picnic and enjoy a wholesome lunch right in the orchard. No need to pack dessert -- just rinse off a fresh apple for a sweet-but-healthy treat. After your apple-picking expedition, bring the fruits of your labor home to make pies, caramel or candy apples, applesauce or an apple bird feeder together.

But remember, just because summer's over, that doesn't mean the bees and poison ivy have gone south for the winter. Dress your little ones in long-sleeve shirts and pants to deter insects and to help avoid contact with suspicious-looking plants.
