Sharing books that you loved as a kid with your own children is one of the really special parts of being a parent. As is, we think, sharing some great classic videos. Did you love Snoopy's WWI Ace crawling through the French countryside? Charlie Brown's ghost costume gone awry? Or was your favorite scene the one in which Linus sits in the pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin with the conviction only a small child can possess? Your kids will appreciate sharing something special from your childhood with you, and this lovely little animated film is worth settling down for and watching together. Some wholesome treats make the evening complete.
What you'll need:
- "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" on video or DVD
- Apple cider
- Spiced Pumpkin Nut Bread
What you'll do:
The evening before, or in the afternoon, make the Spiced Pumpkin Nut Bread. After supper, get the kids settled in front of the TV and pass around the popcorn, cider and Spiced Pumpkin Nut Bread. As you watch the video, or afterward, share your own memories of Halloween -- your favorite costumes from childhood, what trick-or-treating was like when you were a kid, your favorite treat -- and ask your kids to talk about what they are looking forward to about this coming Halloween. Your kids might note that all the Peanuts characters make their own costumes in the video -- if you ever made your own, share that with them, and ask them whether they'd rather have home-made this year or store bought! (If they jump at that idea, take a look at iVillage's Halloween Parade gallery for some inspiration from other moms!)
