With Halloween nearly here, this is a great night to carve your family's pumpkin. A pumpkin carving kit makes it fast and easy. Once you've cleaned the pumpkins, toast the seeds -- they make a yummy, healthy treat for everyone!
What you'll need:
- A large pumpkin
- Newspaper or vinyl table cloth
- Pumpkin carving kit (we like the ones from Pumpkin Masters, available at YankeeHarvest.com)
- Large bowl (for holding raw seeds)
- Jelly-roll baking pans
- Canola oil spray
- Sea salt
What you'll do:
Cover your work area with the newspaper or vinyl tablecloth. Select your pattern for the pumpkin from the kit, and follow the manufacturer's directions for carving. Once you've cleaned the pumpkins, put your kids to work picking out the pumpkin seeds from the pulp -- this is a great way to keep little ones busy and safely out of the way while you or another adult carve the pumpkin with sharp implements! Once the seeds have been separated, rinse them and pat dry using paper towels. Spread the seeds in a single layer on the jelly-roll pans and lightly spray with canola oil, tossing and turning so that the seeds get completed covered. Bake in a 425-degree oven for 10 minutes or until lightly brown. Remove from oven and transfer to a clean bowl, and sprinkle with sea salt. Munch away!
