Amazingly, no matter how you feel about football in general, and no matter how much you dislike advertising every other day of the year, the Super Bowl, with its famed commercial breaks, is a television event almost no one chooses to miss. So get into the spirit with a family Super Bowl party and hold your own "Super Bowl Commercial Olympics."
What you'll need:
Index cards (10 per person)
What you'll do:
Before the game, count out 10 index cards for each person. Label them 1 to 10. At the party, nominate an official score keeper (best if it's an adult) and decide on the qualifications on which you'll judge the commercials. You can use straightforward categories like originality, humor, cleverness and style, or you can make up silly ones. After each commercial, have the "judges" show the card with the points they're giving the commercial for each category, Olympic style, with 10 being the highest. The scorekeeper tallies, then averages, the judges' numbers for the commercial's score in each category. (So if you have six judges, and they award a commercial an 8, 7, 9, 10, 8 and 8, respectively, for originality, the commercial's overall score is 8.2.) At the end of the Super Bowl, the scorekeeper announces the winners in each category. Enjoy and, of course, don't forget to watch the actual football game!
