We've all wanted to do it at one point or another, but few of us have the guts or -- let's face it -- the flair for the dramatic shown by a flight attendant who resigned from his job over an airplane PA system then literally took a slide, as in the aircraft's emergency slide, into the future.
A New York judge set bail today at $2,500 for JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater, 38, who has been charged with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment after apparently losing his cool aboard an Aug. 9 flight from Pittsburgh to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. The drama began when the flight was taxiing to the gate and a passenger who had reportedly been told to remain seated instead began pulling items from the overhead luggage bin and hit Slater in the head.
The flight attendant demanded an apology but the passenger refused, according a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey official quoted by the Associated Press. That's when Slater reportedly took to the public address system, dropped the F-bomb, declared that he was quitting his job and then grabbed some beers from the galley before deploying the plane's emergency exit chute and sliding to the ground. He then made his way to his car and drove home, where he was later arrested. Wonder if the relief he felt from quitting turned to dread once the cops showed up.
Already a folk hero on Facebook and Twitter, Slater has become an overnight symbol of the fed-up wage slave who's just not going to take it anymore.
