iVillage - Latest Blog Posts and Slideshows http://www.ivillage.com/entertainment iVillage en-us A New APP-roach for Sesame Street Sesame Workshop recently announced the launch of its first-ever app for the iPhone and iPod Touch: "Grover's Number Special". Pretty hip for a brand that's only a year younger than I am. By contrast, I can barely download a ringtone, much less build an iPhone app.

Now you can keep your kids busy while you’re on the go, so long as you're not expecting any calls.

In the game, kids help Grover manage a restaurant by catching and counting ingredients for nutritious meals. (If you know anything about Grover's career as a waiter, don't order the BIG hamburger.)

Sesame doesn't plan on being a one-app wonder. Upcoming official iPhone/iPod games include "Elmo's Monster Maker" and "Sesame Street 123".

With Sesame aggressively pioneering new platforms -- the Workshop launched a new Facebook presence this month and their first blog earlier this year -- no one should ever have to ask again, "Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?" It's already wherever you are.

Why New Moon Made Me Switch from Team Edward to Team Jacob In the past few months, I’ve been overwhelmed with in-your-face Robert Pattinson mania. I have to admit, all his sexy new photos and charming interviews have definitely won me over. Plus, who can resist that British accent?

So, going to see New Moon, I was a card-carrying member of Team Edward. There was no denying my schoolgirl crush on Rob. But beyond that, Edward seemed like the perfect guy for Bella (Kristen Stewart) -- strong, protective and passionate with just the right amount of danger. Team Jacob? No way. I saw Taylor Lautner as an awkward kid, and thought his character was just wasting his time competing with Edward. And that long, unruly hair? Not cute.

I sat down in the theater ready to swoon over my favorite vampire and revel in Bella’s heartache after losing him. Two hours later, I walked into the lobby a changed woman. Edward who? I guess in the year since Twilight's debut I had been focused on Robert the actor, and the romantic, fantastical story of Edward and Bella. But being reunited with Edward's pasty white skin and slow, stilted speech was a harsh reminder that Edward is not Rob.

It seemed the second time around, the New Moon creators were determined to exaggerate everything about the film. With all the hype surrounding the movie, it’s easy to see why they wanted to step it up. But fans are looking for believable characters to do justice to the story they know so well. I’m guessing they are not looking for overly literal translations and unnecessarily long dramatic pauses. For example, we know Edward’s sister Alice (Ashley Greene)  is supposed to be graceful and cat-like, but does she need to catapult herself off a railing and jump down from the staircase at school in her opening scene? Probably not.

Edward’s character exaggerations were even more extreme. Sure, he’s deeply pained, but his constant stink-face was a major turn-off. With each scene his pain worsened, which in turn meant his face got more and more twisty and his breathing turned to heavy panting. And instead of coming off as a loving, concerned boyfriend (albeit vampire), he started to seem more like a stern, overly protective father.

Jacob, on the other hand, was the perfect antidote to Edward's over-the-top drama. He managed to show his emotional pain and passion for Bella but still display his sense of humor and sarcastic wit. His balanced emotions made him seem like a normal guy -- someone who might exist in real life (aside from the whole werewolf thing.) And viewers were often treated to his bright, white smile -- a nice contrast to Edward's constant "I'm about to be sick" grimace.

By the ending credits, my mind was made up -- I was changing teams. I’m still on Team Robert, but my loyalty is now with Team Jacob. After all, a girl's got a right to change her mind.

Audrina Patridge Finds 'Glee' with New Man New potential couple alert! Hint: they both play dim-witted cuties on popular TV shows. One is on a so-called reality show, the other is on a musical dramedy set in a high school. Any guesses?

If you said Audrina Patridge and up-and-coming Glee star, Mark Salling, there's a gold star waiting for you somewhere.

On Thursday, The Hills star was seen getting cozy with Salling, who plays the close-cropped-mohawked jock, Puck, on the awesome new FOX series.

Patridge and Salling were at Los Angeles hotspot Voyeur for Us Weekly's Hot Hollywood party, and according to UsMagazine.com, the two were "joined at the hip." Seated at the same table, they spent nearly an hour "talking into one another's ear and laughing."

But most importantly, Patridge and Salling not only left the party at the same time, their entourages piled into two cars that followed each other into the warm California night.

Audrina recently split -- for the second time -- from her BMX-racer boyfriend, Corey Bohan.

Mark Salling's love history is not yet fully chronicled by the tabloid world, but we do know that he's close to his family in Dallas, Texas. He told E! Online that he's glad he and his Glee cast will have Thanksgiving off so that he can spend time with his loved ones back home.

Do you think Audrina and Mark make a good match? Chime in below!

Sarah Palin Woman of the Week Talk about a whirlwind week. With the release of her personal memoir, the kick-off of her bus tour, and her highly anticipated appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Sarah Palin has been front and center in the spotlight.

When Palin resigned from her post as governor of Alaska in July, many people thought she'd disappear from the headlines. But her supporters knew she'd be back -- and stronger than ever. The fact that her book, Going Rogue: An American Life, was an Amazon best-seller before it was even released is proof that she's still able to captivate audiences.

To promote the book, Palin sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a friendly chat on Monday afternoon. The two addressed rumors that Oprah had "snubbed" Sarah by not inviting her on the show during the presidential election, in which Oprah passionately supported Barack Obama. Oprah kept things cordial with the politician, and Palin came out looking like a star. She even helped Lady O achieve her highest ratings in two years.

When the book finally hit stores on Tuesday, readers were given an inside view of what really goes on in the Palin family and we even gleaned 15 family rules the former governor was happy to share.

Love her or hate her, you've got to commend Sarah Palin for her strategic self-promotion. We just might be looking at another maverick in the running in 2012.

Check out the highs and lows of Sarah Palin!

'Remember Me' Trailer: Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin Get Cozy If you're a Twilight fan, you'll recall the rumor mill buzzing earlier this year about Robert Pattinson's relationship with non-Kristen Stewart leading lady Emilie de Ravin. The two were reportedly seeing a lot of each other while filming a new drama, shortly after de Ravin's divorce. Was Pattinson two-timing Stewart? We don't know, because they're still not officially dating. Here's what we do know: Pattinson and de Ravin's movie has a new trailer, and there's definitely some chemistry going on.

Remember Me, a "romantic drama," stars Pattinson as an NYC college student who's become violent and rebellious since the loss of his mother. Just when things start to seem hopeless, he finds redemption in his love for de Ravin, a classmate with a lust for life. But soon -- well, here's what the official synopsis says: "Soon, hidden secrets are revealed, and the circumstances that brought them together slowly threaten to tear them apart."

The trailer, below, promises a revelatory performance from Robert Pattinson, who's forsaking his usual supernatural powers for a James Dean-like intensity. Emilie de Ravin, best known as Claire on Lost, is also establishing herself here as leading-lady material. And the pairs' dueling fathers are played by Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper, both actors who need few words to say volumes. In short, it all looks very promising. Plus there's that great line spoken to Pattinson partway through: "That's why chicks dig you, man. They love this freaky poetic crap." Indeed we do.

Free Vampire Movie: Bram Stoker's Dracula Have you heard about this new vampire movie opening tonight? Something about a sparkly dead guy and a werewolf and a girl who mutters a lot? Yeah, we thought it might ring a bell.

Well, Edward and Bella may not have ever existed without the great vampire revival of the 1990s. And the movie that made vampires sexy was Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this 1992 gothic-horror romance stars Keanu Reeves as Van Helsing, Winona Ryder as Mina Harker and Gary Oldman as the Count himself. It's supposed to be a faithful adaptation of the novel Dracula, but it sexies up the story considerably, creating a love triangle between the Count, Van Helsing and Mina. Coppola imbues the movie with all the atmosphere and foreboding that he brought to The Godfather, while at the same time basking in the melodrama of torch-lit castles, fog creeping over floors, and blood dripping from neck wounds. And every vampire attack carries an erotic charge, like the seduction/attack of Van Helsing by Dracula's brides (watch for Monica Bellucci in her first American film role).

We named Bram Stoker's Dracula one of the best vampire movies of all time, and it just got even better -- because you can watch right now, for free...

As for that other vampire movie, you can buy your tickets here -- if there are any left.

Lost Comes Back in February! Lost is approaching its last season, and still -- so many mysteries! Where did the smoke monster come from? Where did Claire and the baby vanish to? What do the numbers mean? What's with the freakin' polar bear already?

Lucky for everyone, we can solve one mystery right now: When is Lost returning?

ABC has announced that the final season of Lost will premiere on Tuesday, February 2nd. The two-hour premiere will kick off at 9 p.m., following a recap special at 8 p.m. (because let's face it, the last five seasons are all starting to blend together). Starting February 9, the series will fall into its regular time slot on Tuesdays from 9-10 p.m.

We don't know any plot details, but we do know which actors will receive star billing. That list includes some surprises: among the main characters for this season are long-lost Claire (Emilie de Ravin), Miles the ornery scientist (Ken Leung), the Others' Richard (Nestor Carbonell), and Ilana -- the head honcho survivor from that other plane crash (Zuleikha Robinson). All the other series regulars are in effect, except for Juliet (guess she really died, huh?).

Over at Lost fansite The Tail Section, they're already forming new theories:

The return of de Ravin and the lack of Mitchell and many DHARMA folks suggests to me that all those theories about the bomb working and changing the future so Oceanic 815 lands safely are true.... But then how the heck are Locke and Sun still on the Island? I can’t explain it, except that we may be dealing with weird parallel universes.

If Oceanic Flight 815 didn't crash, does that mean the whole show never happened? You're blowing our minds, J.J. Abrams...

Are you excited for the return of Lost? Chime in below!

'The Blind Side': In Salute to the Do-Right Woman Leigh Anne Tuohy, as played by Sandra Bullock in the new inspirational sports movie The Blind Side, is a rich Memphis dynamo interior decorator and mother of two who takes in a homeless African-American teen named Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) and helps guide him into the NFL. Although it’s based on real people, shown in photos over the end credits, among some movie reviewers there’s a skepticism about, if not an outright bias against, this kind of take-charge wife, mother and, yes, card-carrying Republican.

The Village Voice’s Melissa Anderson dismissed Mrs. Tuohy as a "steel Magnolia" and wrote: “But for all the supposed uplift, Bullock's facile Good Christian Materialist Southern Woman is part of The Blind Side's desperate cynicism.” In The New York Times, A. O. Scott chimed in: “Bullock is convincing enough as an energetic, multitasking woman of the New South, who knows her own mind and usually gets her own way,” then sneers a few paragraphs later, “Ms. Bullock’s brisk self-confidence can be appealing -- until it becomes annoying….after a while her display of goodness sinks into vanity.”

But I recognized Leigh Anne immediately. Even though I have my own bias against sports movies and am allergic to “Gipper” speeches, I embraced her character, one that I’ve rarely seen in contemporary movies. Tuohy is a successful heroine with the confidence of a Clint Eastwood lawman, but she has a manicure instead of a Magnum 44.

Leigh Anne is a tornado in a twinset -- and I know American women like her. I see them every day in the pick-up line at school. They’re all around us -- but rarely depicted in the movies. They’re take-charge gals who drive their families like the SUV’s they’ve worked hard to purchase. One of my best friends put her self through a Southern college as a beauty queen. She works hard, manages the commercial properties she owns, drives her children to private school where she’s a class mother and vocal advocate for her kids’ education, throws cocktail parties for 100 for her husband’s business -- and still has time to take her shoes off and ask me what the latest movies are over a glass of wine in her spotless yet comfy living room. She’s always generously entangled in other people’s lives because she cares, deeply, and feels an obligation to do right.

So, I salute Leigh Anne Tuohy, and all the women of the car pool, working challenging jobs, keeping up with their women friends, navigating their children’s educations and their husband’s careers, buying birthday presents and organizing Thanksgiving -- even if it’s just really good take-out in front of the TV. And I salute Bullock who steps into those Nordstrom pumps and takes no prisoners on or off the football field. I recognize that do-right woman, and she’s not just on the screen, she’s here among us.

Eva Mendes: Men Never Hit on Me Though she's done her share of lighthearted films, Eva Mendes isn't afraid to go to the dark side. In her new film Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (costarring Nicolas Cage and Val Kilmer), the 36-year-old actress takes on the role of Frankie, a prostitute with a cocaine addiction. But despite the heavy subject matter, filming the movie wasn't a difficult experience. "It was actually a pretty light shoot," she tells iVillage.

In real life, Mendes is happily in a long-term relationship with boyfriend George Augusto and has a loyal companion in her dog Hugo. iVillage spoke with Mendes about whether she sees kids in her future, her Thanksgiving plans (bring on the pajamas!) and her love for the New Moon stars.

Did playing a prostitute in Bad Lieutenant make you sympathize with women in that situation?

I've always sympathized with women in that situation. But not only sympathize, because not all prostitutes are victims -- I respect it. I know it's not legal in most parts of the country, but I respect working women and respect their decision. It is the oldest profession in the world.

Was it depressing working on such a dark film?
No, it wasn't tortuous. [Director Werner Herzog] was so fast. It was crazy -- we were done at lunchtime every day. So it wasn't like we were being tortured -- which I've worked like that before on a dark film when you're there for 16 hours a day. It wasn't like that.

Are you worried that your film comes out the same day as New Moon?
Wait a minute ... does it open the same day as New Moon? Really? I didn't know that. Ha, oh my god, we're gonna get killed.

Have you jumped on the Twilight bandwagon yet?
Believe it or not, I actually haven't seen the first Twilight, but I have it. My friend bought it for me because I really want to see it and my friends like it. But I think Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are just the cutest, sexiest things that have come around in a long time. I'm into them.

You’re the face of the new, sexy Calvin Klein campaign. Was it scary posing nude?
No, I work really hard before those photo shoots with. I take care of my body very well and amp the cardio, and I eat well. Then on the shoot I just kind of let go and leave all my inhibitions at the door. And I have Steven Klein shooting me, and my photos are with Jamie Dornan, who's an actor and a model -- he's so beautiful, he makes it so easy.

Do you have men hitting on you all the time, or are they too shy to approach you?

No, I have a very interesting outlook on that. I think women -- all women -- control whether men hitting on them. We all throw out nonverbal cues -- or sometimes verbal cues -- if we're available or not. I am not available, so I throw that out there nonverbally. Men don't want to get rejected, so they don't approach me. And it's so funny because Will Smith, in the movie Hitch that I did with him, he tells my character that I have a "F off" sign on top of my head. And the funny thing is that I've been told that before by guys. If you're making eyes at a guy in a bar, he's going to come up to you. But if you're not even looking in his direction, he's not going to risk that chance of being rejected. That's my theory. So, no, I don't get hit on -- ever.

You've been with your boyfriend for six years. Do you see kids in your future?
To be totally honest, I just don't know. I have a dog, Hugo, who has probably changed my life. I've had him for almost three years now and just caring for something other than myself is very appealing to me. Yet, I certainly don't think me loving my dog means I'm ready to have kids.

Have you ever been starstruck around another celebrity?
I was starstruck once when I met Mick Jagger in an elevator in Paris. I think my heart technically stopped for two seconds. I was riding up with him, and I was thinking, "Okay, do I say something? Am I clever?" Like, I can't say, "I love you." How many times as he heard that? I can't say his music changed my life. How many times has he heard that? So I was, like, going through the gamut of emotions and thoughts of, "Do I go clever or do I go earnest?" And I didn't do much. I said "good night" when he got out. Pretty pathetic.

Do you have a pop-culture guilty pleasure?
I love this show called Girls Behaving Badly. Oh my god, it's so fun. It's all women and they do pranks on people in the streets. See, I don't like [Ashton Kutcher's prank show] Punk'd. I don't like that manipulation, it's almost mean. Punk'd went too far. And I know that they had asked my camp if they could punk me, and my manager would always say, "No, definitely not. She's the wrong person, because she would really be upset." I get so emotionally invested in everything I do, that if I thought I destroyed something like that, I would just lose it. I would just die. But with Girls Behaving Badly it's just so silly. They'll do the silliest stuff. You have to check it out.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Do you have any special plans?
I'm just staying home with the family. I'm fortunate to have my family really close to me. Everybody lives in L.A., so we're just getting together. We do something really cute -- Pajama Thanksgiving, so we're all in our pajamas. It's so fun.

Do you have a favorite dish?
We do American Thanksgiving and then my mom makes old-school Cuban food, so all of it is my favorite dish.

Funny People iVillage Exclusive Clip I hate to toot our own horn, but pop culture loves iVillage.com. First Alec Baldwin mentioned us on 30 Rock. Then we ended up on the Funny People DVD. That's right, while filming Funny People -- starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen -- Leslie Mann told Eric Bana: "Do you know I went to iVillage.com and they list 32 ways of knowing if your husband's having an affair? And you are guilty of 18!"

Mann's character then tells him how he fits the list: " Number 16: Would rather watch TV than have sex. Number 18: Your mate turns the table and accuses you of cheating."

What can we say -- iVillage knows women!

Funny People, despite its name, has some pretty emotional scenes. The movie focuses on the life of George (Sandler), a famous comedian who learns, that due to an illness, he only has a short time left to live. George hires Ira (Rogen), an aspiring comedian, to be his joke writer and the two form an odd friendship. Meanwhile, George tells his ex-fiance and love-of-his-life Laura (Mann) about his fate. Though she's married to Clarke (Bana), she decides to be unfaithful and start up an affair with George.

So, yes, while it's an emotional tale, there's also tons of humor, which is only expected of writer-director Judd Apatow (Mann's real-life husband) and stars Sandler and Rogen. Dave Attell, Sarah Silverman, Norm Macdonald, Paul Reiser, Ray Romano, Andy Dick and Eminem all make cameos as well.

And it's not just the movie itself which is hilarious. The DVD is packed with extras, from gag reels to archival footage of Sandler and Apatow to Line-O-Rama, which features the iVillage.com mention.

Funny People comes out on DVD Nov. 24.

The Oscar-winning actress, who's engaged to famed film director Darren Aronofsky, says that the men in her life bring her a lot of joy -- and life lessons. She and Darren have a son named Henry, and, even though he's only 2 years old, they're constantly learning from him.

"[He's taught me] to sing and joke more -- he has an unbelievable sense of humor," Weisz says. "I’ve learned more patience; he’s definitely taught me to go more with the flow."

Though she says that she's "fallen even more in love with his father" since Henry came into their lives, Weisz admits she hasn't been in rush to walk down the aisle.

"We are engaged, and Darren and I are completely committed to 'until death do us part,' although we haven’t made it official with the paperwork yet," Rachel says. "It’s not for any political reason or that we’re waiting for this or for that, but maybe one day we will have an official ceremony."

Weisz stars in the Oscar-buzzy screen adaptation of Alice Sebold's popular book, The Lovely Bones, which is helmed by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson. Weisz seemed a bit surprised to hear that the director referred to her as "fearless" in her acting.

"Really? Because I feel quite scared quite often," she says of taking on difficult movie roles. "But fear makes life more interesting."

The Lovely Bones hits theaters on January 15th, 2010; the December issue of Redbook is on newsstands now.

Will House of Fun be Big Brother for Kids? Have you ever thought about what Big Brother would be like with kids living in the hard-wired house instead of grownups? I'm thinking probably not because:

a) The folks on Big Brother already act like children
b) Watching Big Brother and thinking don't go well together
c) Two words: Kid Nation

Well, some Hollywood producers see gold in the idea. Reveille Productions -- the people who not only helped bring you Ugly Betty and The Office, but also contributed My Dad is Better Than Your Dad, Date My Mom, The Biggest Loser, and American Gladiators to civilization -- is looking for 13-15 year old boys in the Los Angeles area to participate in a new game show called House of Fun.

In the House of Fun, there will be no grownups and no rules. Meanwhile, parents will be able to watch their every anarchic move. Think Lord of the Flies meets Animal House

I'm not looking forward to this one. It's one thing when adolescent adult behavior becomes spectator sport, but another when we take advantage of young peoples' natural immaturity for our viewing pleasure. I'm reminded of what Variety columnist Brian Lowry said of Kid Nation: "Only the latest program to use kids as fodder for fun and profit, which doesn't make the trend any less disturbing." Well, perhaps no longer the latest, Brian

I'd also like to meet the kid who comes out of this experience better for it, whether he makes heartfelt claims of reformation in his obligatory video blog or not.

But if you see value in sending your kid to Casa de Chaos and watching helplessly from the sidelines, then by all means go ahead. You’re a savvier Hollywood thinker than I am.

The Return of My Little Pony Remember seeing Toy Story for the first time and enjoying how it brought so many of your favorite toys and games to life? It seemed like a clever gag at the time, but resurrecting toy brands in TV and film has since become big business -- or a sad indication of the dearth of good ideas in kids media these days.

The latest straight-from-the-toybox characters to get a 21st century makeover are a certain breed of candy-colored diminutive horses with Farrah Fawcett-inspired manes. Thanks to the success of last month's one-hour Disney Channel special My Little Pony: Twinkle Wish Adventures, Discovery/Hasbro has fast-tracked a MLP TV series for their new joint network. Twinkle Wish Adventures is also playing in select movie theaters this month.

(I somehow failed to catch My Little Pony: Twinkle Wish Adventures, but the title alone tells me that, to adult eyes, these may have been the longest 60 minutes in television history.)

The last time these ponies galloped on the big screen was over 20 years ago in My Little Pony, The Movie. That "flicka" barely got out of the gate in 1986 before failing at the box office. But it inspired two different television shows -- the fantasy-world set My Little Pony in 1986 and the more real-world set My Little Pony Tales in 1992.

According to Wikipedia, these latter ponies "lived in a human-like town where they went to school, ran businesses, went on vacation and exchanged currency for goods." It was only a matter of time before they started hanging out in bars, giving rides at bat-mitzvahs, knocking over liquor stores, and starring in their own E! True Hollywood Story. But now, like Willie Aames, they're getting a Hollywood-style reprieve.

I personally know the MLP franchise best as toys. At one time, the economy-sized ponies made perfect "Hanukkah Night Four" presents for my girls. But kids can't lovingly brush the silky mane of a character on a TV screen -- not without getting a major static shock anyway.

As long as the Ponies are getting their Hollywood moment, I suggest they hook up with Barbie, the reigning queen of toy-to-multimedia star crossover. She could show them the ropes, teach them a few makeover tricks, and best of all, they can share hair care tips and products. Can't you just picture them together on QVC?

Kristen Stewart: Bella and Edward's Breakup Was More Like a Death It's no secret that young girls everywhere are counting down the hours until New Moon hits theaters on Friday. But the second film in the Twilight saga is definitely not your typical fluffy tween obsession: It's darker, edgier and full of heartbreak.

"When you're told after a really daring move that you were really wrong, you feel really stupid," Kristen Stewart, who plays heroine Bella Swan, tells iVillage about her character. "And that's where we find her in New Moon. She's sort of lost everything that she thought completed her."

In the beginning of the movie, Bella goes through an emotional breakup, but the 19-year-old actress says she wasn't drawing from her own life. "I can't really draw from personal experience," says Kristen, who's been romantically linked to costar Robert Pattinson. Reading Stephenie Meyer's New Moon book was the only inspiration she needed.

"It's written really well," Kristen says. "It's the worst breakup I've ever read -- ever. Instead of a breakup scene, I called it a death scene."

Check out our exclusive video to hear Kristen dish about her onscreen chemistry with Robert and share her thoughts on the "hot" Bella Swan Barbie doll.

'30 Rock' Recap: Taking the Piss Lemon learns two rather important things this episode: 1.) Don't drink Frank's sun tea (it's pee!) and 2.) Her apartment is turning into condos. As for the latter, Lemon weighs staying in her own apartment and facing a sky-high rent increase, or taking Jack's advice and using her Dealbreakers money to expand into the apartment above.

She opts for the second choice and finds in the apartment above a hipster (Nate Corddry) named Brian. He invites her to join forces with him and move in, to damn the man. She agrees, secretly planning to drive him out at the first opportunity.

What Does Walt Disney Have Against Moms? One of my biggest pet peeves in Disney movies is the killing off of moms. It truly irks me that when I go to a “kid flick,” I have to worry that it will reinforce the innate fear that children have about confronting their parents’ mortality.

Yes, I am aware that some Disney movies are based on fairytales which date back hundreds of years. Most of these stories involve the loss of the mother prior to the beginning of the story, hence the existence of the wicked stepmother.

With this said, what about Disney movies that exterminate the moms with scenes that could give Steel Magnolias a run for its money? I haven’t even let my children see Disney tearjerker’s like Bambi, whose mom is shot dead in front of him, or Dumbo, whose mom is caged and carted off while pleading with an outstretched trunk.

No, instead I took my kids to see comedies like Finding Nemo, which starts with Nemo's mom and siblings being eaten by a barracuda (my son cried so much, I had to skip ahead on the DVD for the next 3 years). We then went to see Lilo and Stitch, and, well…oops, parents killed in a car accident. We tried Chicken Little and yep, you guessed it, no mom. Was there a mom in Pocahontas, Aladdin, or even The Goofy Movie? No, no, and no. It’s as if Disney is suggesting to audiences that moms are totally unnecessary in the lives of their children. Well, why would we be, when the kids can clearly be raised by doting Dads, fairies, dwarves, and adorable woodland creatures?

I imagine there's a warning sign on the writer’s room door that reads: “Mothers: Enter at Your Own Risk.” Of course, when it comes to buying tickets, toys, theme park admissions, or any other Disney merchandise, Walt expresses the opposite sentiment; he's our BFF. Maybe the writers should remember that in their next brainstorming session. Then they could do something totally outrageous, like write us into the story rather than out of it!

Little Couple Best TV Marriage This week, I recorded TLC's The Little Couple (Tuesdays, 10 p.m.), and then watched it with my TV remote in hand. "I'm going to want to hit fast forward," I thought. But I was wrong. Bill and Jen Klein on The Little Couple are the most engaging and intelligent pair I've seen on a reality show. Of all the marriages currently on TV, I'd say theirs is by far the strongest, most loving one. They are the antidote to Jon and Kate -- the "how to" example in the face of the Gosselins' "how not to."

In this week's episode, TLC's cameras followed them on a daytime TV appearance on Dr. Oz. Before they go, we see Jen at work on the neonatal unit at the hospital. She is a self-assured physician, clearly knowledgeable in her field. That she has to use a step stool to stand over the crib of a struggling preemie doesn't detract from the fact that this doctor is both kind and in control.

When the Kleins travel to New York for the taping, we see their easy way together. Their banter is tender and natural -- not just when they're alone but also in the hectic moments before stepping in front of Dr. Oz's live audience. Bill's dry wit emerges throughout the episode. After the appearance, he says, "I got a joke in, which is, of course, my objective." (The couple's actual objective was to discuss the medical implications of dwarfism.) Later, at dinner in a restaurant, Jen cheerfully asks a waiter, "You wouldn't happen to have a set of linens I could sit on?" To which Bill adds, "She likes to be taller than me." There is no whiff of self-pity here, or manufactured pluck.

"I'll probably try to impress Jen until the day I die," Bill says, and it's not mushy. If there's something different about this TV couple, it's this: They are each other's closest and dearest friend.
