Feeling fetal movement at two months?

My wife, about two months pregnant according to the doctor, felt something like a tug on her belly button about a week ago. She swears she felt the baby move. Could this be true or just stomach movements? Should we correct the doctor?

I have heard many women say that they thought they felt fetal movement this early -- and who am I to disagree or try to prove them wrong? The fetus is probably floating rather than actively moving at this stage, so I would imagine that she would not perceive this yet. However, the uterus is very "active" at this stage, increasing in size and changing in shape and position within the pelvis. The umbilicus becomes a ligament after our own birth, and this may cause discomfort or pulling sensations as it stretches to accommodate the enlarging uterus. Also loops of bowel become displaced or pushed closer to the abdominal wall, making movement of gas more obvious.

Regarding your last menstrual period dilemma -- I think it is best to "remember" when her real LMP was. This will matter when it comes to avoiding unnecessary intervention in the last month of the pregnancy and also help in distinguishing normal growth for her dates.

Best of luck for this pregnancy.
