In the ongoing rivalry between Madonna and Lady Gaga, Elton John is Team Gaga all the way. Sir Elton blasted Madonna in a recent TV interview, calling her a has-been and saying she'd been needlessly cruel to the younger pop star.
"Why is she such a nightmare?" said the British singer-songwriter. "Sorry, her career is over. Her tour has been a disaster and it couldn't happen to a bigger c***."
While John acknowledged that Madonna makes great pop music, he said that her attempts to be a sexy dance-club star have made the 53-year-old singer look foolish.
"If Madonna had any common sense she would have made a record like Ray Of Light and stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and make great pop records, which she does brilliantly," he said. "But no, she had to go and prove... she looks like a f****ing fairground stripper."
"She's been horrible to Gaga," John added.
Madonna dissed the "Marry the Night" singer during her concert tour this spring, when she performed a mocking mash-up of "Express Yourself" and Gaga's "Born This Way." It wasn't the first time Madonna had passive-aggressively accused Gaga of plagiarizing her; in a 20/20 interview, she said that "Born This Way" was "a wonderful way to redo my song."
It's no wonder that Elton felt the need to defend Gaga, since they've recently become very close friends; she's even the godmother of his one-year-old son Zachary (with partner David Furnish). Then again, John and Madonna have never really gotten along. In 2004, he told the press that the pop star deserved to be shot for lip-synching during her concert tour. (Her press agent denied that Madonna lip-syncs at live events.) He accused her of lip-synching again in 2012, before she played the Super Bowl. John's partner also got in on the feud action this year, responding to her best original song win at the Golden Globes by writing, "Madonna. Best song??? F*** off!!!" on his Facebook page.
For what it's worth, both Elton and Madonna are serial feuders. Besides Gaga and Elton John, the "Girl Gone Wild" singer has picked fights with Janet Jackson and Mark Wahlberg, and is currently at odds with Piers Morgan (who has banned her from his CNN show). John has also accumulated a long list of his own feuds, including spats with Simon Cowell, Keith Richards, George Michael and Lily Allen. Maybe the two pop legends would get along if they just had an enemy in common?
