Like many celeb-watchers, Joan Rivers was upset to hear Rihanna tell Oprah Winfrey that she still loves Chris Brown. Being Joan Rivers, she reacted by tweeting an off-color joke at Rihanna's expense. But the pop star was not amused, and she engaged the comedian in a war of words over Twitter.
"Rihanna confessed to Oprah Winfrey that she still loves Chris Brown. Idiot! Now it's MY turn to slap her," Rivers, 79, tweeted on Friday.
The "Where Have You Been" singer took the bait and immediately tweeted back at the Fashion Police host, "@Joan_Rivers wow u really do get slow when you're old huh?" She then added another jab: "Slap on some diapers."
Not one to be easily offended, Rivers shot back, "Honey, @Rihanna, everyone knows: If he hit you once, he’ll hit you again. Read the statistics." She tacked on a cheery invite to her E! show, saying,"PS – Love to have you on Fashion Police!"
Though Rivers may not agree with Rihanna's relationship choices, she has no problem praising the 24-year-old star's fashion choices -- as in the Fashion Police clip below, where she compliments Rihanna's talent for making designer looks her own.
In her interview last Sunday for Oprah's Next Chapter, the singer opened up about her feelings for her abusive ex-boyfriend. Her comments -- saying that she and Brown were "working on" their friendship, that she will always love him, that he's her best friend -- generated controversy among her fans, many of whom believe that Brown has been let off the hook too easily (and may still pose a threat to Rihanna). Count Joan Rivers among them.
