Fever: Learn about fevers in children

 When to get immediate attention

  • If fever over 101 degrees Fahrenheit persists for more than 24 hours, especially if accompanied by other symptoms
  • If the fever is accompanied by symptoms such as severe coughing, difficulty breathing, stiff neck, listlessness, poor feeding, extreme irritability, diarrhea, vomiting, urinary problems or skin infections

The following should be reported to your doctor not because the fever itself is dangerous but because it may be a sign of a significant infection:

  • If your child is under three months and has a rectal temperature of over 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit
  • If your child is between three and six months and has a rectal temperature of over 101 degrees Fahrenheit
  • If your child is under three years of age and has a temperature of over 103.5 degrees Fahrenheit
