chime in nowSometimes called a “syndrome,” fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, trouble sleeping, bladder or bowel problems, hypersensitivity to stimuli including temperature changes, noises or bright lights, and in some people, memory symptoms and trouble thinking clearly (“fibro fog”). About 5 million American adults, more than 80 percent of them women, have fibromyalgia, which has no known cause. It is believed to have a genetic component, so if someone in your family has fibromyalgia you might be at increased risk of it, too. For people prone to fibromyalgia, a traumatic event (car accident, physical or sexual abuse, divorce, death), an illness or a repetitive injury may trigger the syndrome.
