Fiesta Themed Birthday Party

From bold flavors to bright colors, a fiesta-themed party is a unique party theme your child will love. String up streamers, serve fruity punches and don't forget a pinata filled with the birthday boy's or girl's favorite sweets.

Decorations
Let the warmth and friendliness of Mexico inspire your fiesta-themed party decorations. Choose streamers, balloons and other decorations in bright, happy colors like pink and orange, and drape chairs and sofas with authentic serapes (blankets).

Line your entryway with tiny potted cacti, or if it's an evening affair, use farolitos (made with votives, sand and paper bags) to add drama. You should have lots of colorful flowers, including some to tuck behind your guests' ears.

Costume Ideas
Sombreros and huaraches are always a good costume choice, as are embroidered shirts and twirly skirts for women. You can also open up the theme to include other Latin American cultures and invite your friends to wear guayaberas (Cuba), huipiles (Guatemala) or the gauchos' famous bombachas (Argentina). Ay caramba, there are so many possibilities!

Party Activities
One word: pinata. No fiesta is complete without one, so if you want your party to have a whiff of authenticity, you'll need to find one ASAP. Cram your pinata with candy, toys (superballs are fun) and small trinkets.

The best place to hang a pinata is outside, but if you don't have a lot of room, just make sure you clear some space in your home and move anything breakable. If you don't want the pinata bashing to go on for too long, use a pocketknife to make little incisions in the pinata before you hang it up. It'll smash in no time!
