Fiona Apple loves her fans, but she loves her pet more. The singer has announced that she's canceling the next leg of her concert tour in order to stay home and care for her dying dog.
All South American dates on her current tour have been cancelled. Apple explained that her 14-year-old dog, a pit bull named Janet, is the reason for the tour delay.
In a hand-written note that Apple penned, scanned and posted on her Facebook page and official website, the 35-year-old singer recalls how she adopted Janet as a puppy and how the pet has been her source of companionship and friendship for more than a decade.
"Janet has been the most consistent relationship of my adult life, and that is just a fact," Apple writes. "She's my best friend and my mother and my daughter, my benefactor, and she's the one who taught me what love is."
But for the past two years, Janet has been struggling with the burden of a growing tumor in her chest, and now the end of her life is near.
"When I got back from the last leg of the U.S. tour, there was a big, big difference," Apple shares. "She doesn't even want to go for walks anymore."
Apple said the decision to cancel the rest of her tour was actually easy. "I just can't leave her now, please understand," Apple explains. "If I go away again, I'm afraid she'll die and I won't have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out."
The singer, who knows she will be grieving her best friend soon enough, asks her fans to understand.
"I am asking for your blessing," she writes. "I'll be seeing you."
