First Day of School: 10 Ways to Treat Yourself

  1. Buy or pick a bouquet of your favorite flowers and put it in a place where you can enjoy it all day.
  2. Write a letter to your kids expressing how proud you are of them, and how much you look forward to seeing them enjoy and do well this year in school. (They may groan that it's corny, but think how good you will feel writing it!).
  3. Make a lunch date with a friend -- or for that matter, with your partner, if he or she works.
  4. Hit a matinee showing of that movie you can't take the kids to -- or rent your favorite old movie. And don't skimp on the popcorn.
  5. Take a bike ride or walk in the park, at the beach, down your street. Get out and explore a little.
  6. Pull out those old yearbooks of yours and giggle.
  7. Try calling an old friend you haven't heard from in a while. Or if some blessed silence is what you crave, unplug the phone for a few hours.
  8. Hit the library or bookstore for a new book, or read the newspaper front to back like you always intend to…
  9. Take a nap! We dare you! Or maybe just a nice, long, refreshing bath.
  10. Take a few minutes to remember what it was like when you were in school at your kids' ages -- what you loved, what you wanted, what you did, what you worried about, what your daily routine was like. Write it all down and share it with your kids when they get home. Encourage them to compare their first day at school with your own memories. You'll be amazed!
