Last week we went Back-to-the-Future in fashion! I enjoyed the series finale of a great season of Life on Mars a TV show about a New York detective in 2009 that goes back in time to 1973."
I really loved the retro 70’s fashions. There were so many outfits that we can adapt to today’s fashion. Peasant blouses, long knit scarves and great paisley prints were on screen and they all can find a place in today’s wardrobe.
This spring/summer all lengths of dresses and skirts are in (from mini to maxi lengths) just like back in the 70’s. Maxi dresses are all over the place like the one Meghan Joy wore two weeks ago on American Idol.
Tip: Everyone can wear a maxi no matter what your height. Look for patterns that go vertical, empire waist; it’s not a gown so hem it! -right above your ankle bone works!
If you have arm issues you can either get a maxi with a three quarter sleeves or if it is a halter maxi (as so many of them are this spring), you can pair it with a light weight cardigan or a bolero – it will cover your arms and you get to wear your regular bra! So the only thing doing a deep plunge is your halter not your boobs!
70’s bold prints and loud colors are in style right now. Many of the wrap dresses that I feature in the store have bold patterns and geometric designs that really make these dresses unique and fun.
Don’t limit yourself to drab solid colors and a monochromatic look. That all black look might have worked for Wednesday in the Adams Family but it is a new day for plus fashion.
Let’s break some of the rules that the fashion mavens have drilled into us. Have a sense of adventure and fun.
One fashion rule you can always break is the one about never wearing white after Labor Day. But the one rule you should never break is wearing “white snappy shoes” after 1973. Even Harvey Keitel couldn’t bring them back in style!
