A few studies suggest that ground flaxseed can provide modest relief from hot flashes. Flaxseed is a good source in lignin, another estrogen-like plant compound, as well as cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Dr. Sood recommends starting at a half to a full teaspoon of ground flaxseed daily. In one study, 40 grams of crushed flaxseed reduced hot-flash symptoms by a third. "I like to sprinkle it on cereal or stir it into yogurt," she says. You can also add flaxseed to beverages, but stir well: Large undissolved lumps can cause bowel obstruction.
