I have a confession: I have a thing for old-timey cleaning products. Strange — I know. Sure, I love all the new fangled eco-friendly cleaning products. Still, there is something about an old-school cleaner—the kind I can picture my grandmother using— that makes me feel like they clean better. It's all in my head, I'm sure.
Recently I was in Kiosk, one of my favorite New York shops, and came across Encerite Wax. The Portuguese floor wax comes in a very pretty vintage-looking tin and has been around since 1927 (right up my alley). After a few years living with hardwood floors that never seem to look clean, I got a tin and went home to give it a try. A little bit (okay, a lot) of scrubbing and polishing later and —voila!— shiny, pretty floors. Plus, the light lavender scent left my apartment smelling fresh and clean.
